What do you guys use to decorate your cake dummies?  I’m assuming you don’t use the good stuff!  What kind of frosting?  What can you use in place of fondant or modeling chocolate?  I know that lot all decorative aspects can be replaced, but surely there’s a way to do it cheaper!

I was thinking of using shortening instead of butter, for example!  And maybe play-dough!?

I’m super curious, and would also love to see some of your decorated cake dummies!

sure shortening is better -- plaster of paris is sometimes used but it's so heavy -- royal is nice because you can sand it -- there's product you can get esp for dummies but just use the regular stuff -- no flavoring needed --

Yes, as Sandra said, make b'cream using all shortening and no flavoring.  I have used wall plaster but it has an off smell and what I found had a slight grayish tint to it.  Playdough for 'fondant' works good :)

I've always just used my homemade marshmallow fondant, which is very inexpensive (comparatively).
