I needed to ensure my cake would not get damaged through travel so I stuck a but of royal icing on the base and stuck it to the tupaware box. any tips to loosen the icing without damaging the cake tray

Not exactly sure what you are saying here - can't quite picture the problem but to loosen royal icing I would Soak some HOT water on/around it?

To make sure I am understanding right you basically glued the base that your cake is sitting on to the box with royal icing?  Hmm...can you put the box in about an inch of hot water?  Maybe the heat will help loosen things up a bit.  But how much royal icing are we talking here?  Do you just do a dollop and then place the cake tray on it?  Or do you smear around to almost the size of the cake tray?  If the bottom of the cake tray won't be seen I would just use a small metal spatula and just start chipping away at it slowly.

Next time if you are worried about your cake sliding around get yourself a non-slip rubber rug pad.  They can be cut down to size and will help keep your cake base from sliding
