Hey everyone! I'm new to the forum and also to pulled sugar. I just started dabbling a bit this week. Anyway, I've made some sugar swans to top a cake I'm making for Tuesday. The goal is to pour some light blue ganache on the top and then top it with the swans and some sanding sugar for a little sparkle to make a wintry lake scene.

This may be a stupid question, but I'm wondering if I need straws or dowels as support underneath the swans. What do you guys do with sugar pieces? Can you just rest them on top of the cake or are they too heavy for that?

Your swans do not appear to be heavy enough to require any support.  If you want to keep them, why not make a topper from a cut down cake board, covered in light blue fondant and sprinkled with sanding sugar.  You would not have to be concerned with the swans sinking into the cake (which I do not believe they would) and you can easily lift off the whole topper and save it as a keepsake.
