I am working on a proposal to open a bakery/cafe. I would appreciate any costing or pricing or any business tips you would have. I know most people tell me not to do this. What are your thoughts?
Be sure you understand how much work is involved. Some of the downers are never having a free weekend; you have to be janitor, baker, designer, decoratior, orderer, dishwasher, sales person, and many other jobs - all done by YOU unless you can afford to hire someone to help you. You have to know YOUR costs for each and every tiny ingredient. decoration or part packaging used so you can wisely price you creeations - - lots of math work :) Know your customers. Do you want to specialize in cupcakes, cookies, wedding cakes or maybe only children's b'day cakes. Then know you energy limits - can do you 5 wedding cakes and 4 b'day cakes in one weekend? Are you ready to work as much as 36 hrs straight to get those orders ready? Just some the the things you need to consider. Oh, and where will you work? Are you going to open a store-front bakery or work from home? Is it legal to work from home where you live? How much will utilities, rent, insurance, , equipment like stoves, tables, pans, ingredients and more cost so you before y ou even take one order so you know how many orders you need to do each day.week.month to meet those needs. And I'm sure there will be much more come up that you didn't expect - it always does:)
