Trying to re-create top tier of this cake. Anyone have an idea what the white design in the center of the tiers could be? Are they possibly shells? Hard to tell in this picture. Thanks.Re-Creating 60S Wedding Cake

i'm all about 60's cakes -- but i can't see a thing -- and this is why i have no pictures of those cakes i did -- the flash whited out everything --  it was costly buying film, flash cubes, getting them developed  -- you waited weeks to get your pictures back -- after i did one round and got zero detail like this pic -- i though phffft i ain't going through this again so i just never took pictures --

but if i could see it i could help but can't see a thing -- so sorry --

so just make something up -- google wilton yearbook 1970 -- or just plug in a year -- i looked at 1965-1970 and 1970 looked like the most picture possibilities -- and just pick out a nice side decor -- we piped it all -- double or triple top & bottom borders -- you're there --

Maybe soneone on here has at least one of the /60s Wilton wedding books or a 60's yearbook and can send you a pic.  Sorry I no longer have those.   As I recall most of those cakes had little, if any designs on the sides of each tier but instead used rather large shell bottom borders - sometimes outlined or encircled w/tip 3 lines/piping.

Maybe you could edit the picture - making it darker so maybe the design will show up better??

I have 0 to offer, first because I can't see a thing, and second because I can't pipe.  Listen to -K8memphis and kakeladi!  Both of them are queens of buttercream piping and they know about what they speak!

OP, were you able find what you were looking for?  This is not a '60s, but a late 70's/early 80's, below.  Wilton uses alot of the swag look along with c-shell borders.  I  bet with swags plus the roses/greenery, your anniversary cake be really pretty.  With that said, I would take your photo to restoration company...even Costco does that now...and see if you can't get more detail.

It IS gorgeous!  Too bad Wilton books didn't have this in color, might be easier to see.  Even IRL book photo tough to see detail in design.   it looks like alot of overpiping.

Yes it does.  I cannot make passable roses, much less drop string work and over piping!

I don't care how impressive new styles are, they will never compare to the old style.  I believe it has fallen out of favor because it is so difficult to learn.  For me, it is so much easier to make a gum paste flower or chocolate figure.  I would LOVE to be able to do this!

Vintage wedding cakes are so exquisitely breathtaking.  Tho I have talked with younger generation who say the wedding cakes of today don't even resemble a wedding cake.  Old school.
