Hi,

I need some help in cake/cupcake photography with an iphone. Anyone have any ideas on cheap backgrounds, free editing apps? Also, I usually take the pictures at night, so the artificial ceiling light creates an ugly shadow. Any ideas on how to fix that?

Thanks

I always try to make my pictures while the sun is bright - not in the sun, but beside a window with strong light.  There is a free editing app called PicMonkey that is wonderful for brightening dark photos, balancing out unnatural colors, etc.  I also has a membership level which offers many more options.  I've subscribed for three years and it is the best money I've ever spent.

If you don't have any nice backgrounds, you can use a tablecloth (ironed!).  I've spread a tablecloth over the back and seat of a chair and set my cake in the seat.  Instant background.  This is one that was photographed setting in a chair.  The white edges and the signature were added using PicMonkey.Cake/cupcake Photography Tips

Get in close - as little around the cake as possible.   If you look through my albvum you can see what I mean/how I did mine using a simple digital camera.  Take 4-even up to 10 pix from slightly different angles/distance etc then keep the best 1 or 2.    Most of my pix were taken at the venue so there was no chance to do good backgrounds or lighting etc:  https://www.cakecentral.com/gallery/i/1380904/hearts-delight;     https://www.cakecentral.com/gallery/i/1328002/square-stacked-presents      https://www.cakecentral.com/gallery/i/1294539/lillies     At home or the shop I used a nice tablecloth - usually my lace one like this:  https://www.cakecentral.com/gallery/i/1296880/rose-14-sheet
