I always make my own, but there’s nothing wrong with store bought.

I agree with the others   :)

I make my own, but that's mainly because I prefer the taste of my own and I prefer the way it works as well. I find store bought a little too soft/too sweet/too 'store bought' tasting for what I need it for. That might depend on country/brand etc though.

I also find the process of making things from scratch quite soothing...  the process is just something I quite enjoy.

You can use whatever you like!  Do I love my from scratch chocolate cake with IMBC?  Yeah.  But I also love a Duncan Hines white cake with whipped vanilla frosting from the tub.  There is no right or wrong, just what you like and find tasty.

some nice cookie glaze is the vanilla tub frosting from the grocery store -- just heat it and pour

As all the other have said you are free to do whatever you wish.   May I suggest using this recipe and see how easy and tasty homemade icing can be:  https://www.cakecentral.com/recipe/22469/2-icing    It's one of thousands around that many have found excellent.  Hope you do too :)

Totally agree with all of the above!  Cake is delicious no matter when or how it came to be.  You must try making your own American Buttercream, though, just because it is so easy and offers more flexibility.  The recipe kakeladi provided above is great.  Once you feel comfortable making American Buttercream, you might want to branch out to more sophisticated varieties like Swiss Meringue Buttercream or chocolate ganache.  That is part of the fun!
