Hi! I made a 3 tier baby shower cake last weekend. It was covered in fondant and little fondant zoo animals. I used the plastic support pieces between the layers but the cake started sinking on one side once we finally got it to the venue.....
I used a box cake mix for the cake. Should I be making the cake from scratch to prevent it from sinking? I have to make a wedding cake in October and I want to make sure this one comes out perfect!!
i appreciate any suggestions!!
Hmmm, do you have boards under each tier? When you say plastic support pieces, I'm guessing you're talking about some sort of dowelling/straw supports but it looks like the cake is lacking support.
Did you have any bumps or incidents when travelling to the venue?
Shouldn't matter if you use box or scratch - it's the internal support structure that will hold it all up.
Hope that helps a bit! :)
That would be my guess, too. The cake itself shouldn't be holding any of the weight of the tiers above. Each tier should be on a cake board, and that cake board should be sitting on the dowels in the tier below. Like so... (not my image, I googled it)

I definetly agree w/the others that the tiers do not have any or enough support. With proper support one could stack tiers of jello or whipped cream! It's not the caKE that supports the upper tiers, it's the proper support system. You said:...... I used a box cake mix ...... Should I be making the cake from scratch to prevent it from sinking? NO one can use a mix for tiered cakes. I had a bakery and did :)
