My daughter is hosting a birthday party for her friend and has asked me to make a Harry Potter snitch cake.  I just purchased the Wilton ball pans and feel confident that my go-to butter cake recipe will be sturdy enough for the task.  I think I'd rather use buttercream than fondant, though.  Do you have any tips for getting the buttercream smooth on a sphere?  My bench scrapers will be little help here, I think.

I would go to a craft store and buy sheets of acetate and then cut out a rectangle that is about the size of your hand.  You don't want it too big because then it is harder to work with.  Use this as your smoother.  It is great because it is flexible and will contour to the sides of your round cake allowing you to get a smooth finish.

Or if you have any kind of empty plastic bottle (milk jug; soda pop etc) you can just cut that instead of buying anything.   Of course you will want to wash it well before using but it give you the rounded shape you need for a sphere :)
