I am baking a vanilla cake for my son's birthday. For decorating purposes the outer frosting will be vanilla. Would a chocolate buttercream or chocolate whipped cream filling be too much? Should I just stick with all vanilla?

Certainly you can use choco if you wish :)     ANY filling - be it jam, crushed candy, nuts or cookies mixed into the b'cream or whipped cream would add flavor and interest :)

I think it sounds delightful to have a chocolate filling and vanilla frosting.

I'm not a fan of chocolate with vanilla, but I know tons of people love it! You could do a yummy cookies and creme buttercream filling. My kiddos love it!
