Strong Icing To Support Decorations?

If I were doing any side decorations such as cascading flowers (like in the unicorn cake I just did) are there certain icings that would support and not support? I’m assuming the merengue would not be strong enough to support? What about cream cheese buttercream? Or is Am. BC the only option?
If I had to choose one to decorate with it would be Am BC.
Is it best to let it crust prior to decorating? Does it make a difference if its iced on decorations or fondant decorations?

Not sure what you mean w/this ? :( No, I don't let my b'cream crust before adding decorations. You want fresh icing so the decorations will stick. Depending on what the decorations are I might pipe a bit of fresh b'cream in a small open circle to help hold it if it can be done w/o showing :) The open circle allows for a form of suction to help hold it in place. The crusting is to ensure it sticks - strengthens the hold somewhat.
That is what I meant kakeladi, thank you! I had the issue of piping cascading flowers to a crusted BC and they fell off, but now I just did a cake with fondant on the side of fresh BC and I felt like the pieces were going to slide down. (They maybe moved a millimeter so my fears were false). Thank you for the tips!!
