I found this monster truck cake on cake central. It was sent to me by a friend who wants me to make this for her son's birthday party this weekend. Can anyone help me figure out how it was put together? Is it one huge cake, then carved? Or 2 separate cakes put together? If it's 2 separate, how would I get them to stay side by side without one falling over?
I would do it in 2 parts. Bake up 'sheet' cakes (size depending on how many you want to serve - can be 8x12; or 9x13 or 12x16 - make 2 layers), then bake another one to use as the front part of this creation. Ice each of them, if only on the sides that will go together, then push them together they will stay in place. - the icing hold them in place.
I would make a 4" tall sheet or sq cake for (what is in the picture) the back part, the bake another sheet, cut it in half long ways & stack those. Then cut off the part that becomes a 'ramp' - using the cut-off part on the back cake for that small ramp back there. After that it should be fairly easy to complete icing it and the 'decorations' are minimal - just green piped with the grass tip (is it 233?) and a small round to do the writing. Add the toys and your done. If you have to transport and want to be totally sure it stays together add some dowel rods in the large part to help hold them (not from top to bottom, but thru the side) but really, it shouldn't be necessary.
