I am baking a wedding cake for my cousins wedding. It will be my first wedding cake! I have a few questions...
They want a wedding cake similar to the one pictured below.
They are getting married about four hours away from my home. My first question is, if I bake the cakes on Monday or Tuesday and freeze them, would they be OK for a 4 Hour drive and OK to use for a Saturday wedding? Or should I bake at the location?
I am planning to have an 8 inch base with a 6 inch top. How many of each size of cake should I bake to achieve the height similar to the picture below?
Thank you for any help or advice!

Hello!
Good luck for your first wedding cake! I'm sure you'll do just fine :)
Are you going to do all the stacking, filling, frosting at the location? If so, yep, I'd bake and freeze and then travel with them in a cooler box and they should be absolutely fine.
I usually do 4 layers of cake per tier and my tiers work out to be about 5 inches or so. Those ones in the pic look a teensy bit shorter maybe but I'd still go 4 layers of cake for each tier, each layer about 2cm. Sorry to mix inches and cm!
Hope that helps!
When is the wedding? If it is like a month or so away you could go ahead and bake everything now and keep it in the freezer until you need it. Just make sure everything is wrapped well.
I agree with me_me about doing 4 layers of cake per tier. Each layer could be 1 inch so once you add in the filling/frosting you will end up with about a 5 inch tall cake.
As for decorating, when do you plan on arriving for the wedding? Since this is a simple design you could easily complete the decorating on site. I would probably go ahead and layer up each cake, coat with buttercream, and chill thoroughly before boxing up and transporting them. Everything else you could do onsite if you have the space and are concerned about possible damage in transport.

Start baking now and wrapped well each layer will be just fine for a Saturday wedding. You can even fill and stack the layers into tiers depending if the filling can be frozen. Once you have created your tiers crumbcoat them, wrap well and freeze.
I'm betting those tiers are 4" tall - created by filling two 2" layer and icing them. The base board the cake sits on is at least 1" tall so it makes it look a bit taller. Don't know your weather condititons but for transporting if it is hot, create a 'cool box' by getting 2 cardboard /moving boxes one 2"-3" bigger than the other. Between the two boxes place frozen bags of water wrapped in a towel. Now place your cake(s) in that .
