I have been doing cakes on the side for some time now, however it's becoming more of a business. I need to make set prices for my cakes. However it can be so hard to do starting out cause I don't want to charge not enough and don't want to charge to much.
I'm now the only place in town really doing cakes anymore as all we really have for businesses now is Meijer or Wal-Mart. I'm needing help on a price for upcoming wedding cake I was asked to do June 23rd.
She wants a 3 tiered simple wedding cake. It will be a 12" 9" 6" double layered cake. Along with burlap and flowers made with fondant. I would appreciate any pricing advice very much. We live in some what of a smaller community in mid Michigan if that makes difference
You have many things to consider when you start your pricing.....Are you baking from scratch? Box? Using fondant, bought or made? How much is your time worth? How much time will it take? You have to remember Wal-Mart is not your competition if you are custom. Wal-Mart has a starting price for their wedding cakes go and check it out, you should figure your price by the slice. Also I would think your prices should be higher. You need to figure what your spending on product and your time and figure from there.
I do not think anyone will be able to tell you how to price as we don't know what your spending or how you pricing your time. However, ask Google how to price your cakes and a lot will show up for you to review. I am not sure if this helps you, but when we started we did hard core research and then even would buy product from other vendors so by doing that we knew our product or thought, anyway ours was much better. We also decided that we may not always decorate the prettiest but our product would always taste better than the rest! We are not cheap but we are custom and people know they are getting fresh and will pay what we charge. As they will for you!
