I am doing my first half sheet cake. It’s going to be a 2 layer cake, and I’m concerned about supporting it with cardboard. I read on a couple of other posts that the cardboard bases might not support the weight of that size cake. They’re all I have! And I don’t live near any stores. So I’m wondering, if I double up the cardboard (tape two pieces of cardboard together) will it survive?

Use an old cardboard box, cut the same size as your cake boards, and tape it between two of them.  If you still need more strength, add a second layer of cardboard.

What kind of carboard are you talking about?  If you use a cardboard box - a heavy one - cut/turn the corrigations so they run differently like a+  ....that would help give more strength.   And do be *VERY! sure* you cover it well.   Y OU have no idea where that box has been and who/what has craweled/walked all over it :(  I would use at least 2 if not 3 or even 4 layers of cardboard.  Test it by stacking up some books (or similar) and picking it up to make sure it does not bend.  Once the cake is on it don't pick it up by the ends but slip your hands under it so it rest mostly on your arms when carrying it.
