Please forgive me if this has been discussed... I’m looking to adapt the WASC for a black velvet outer space cake. I’m having trouble sorting it out though. Do I do a red velvet base and add black color? Start with chocolate base instead? Do it a different wat entirely? Normally I can figure these things out easy but it’s been a hot minute since I made a red velvet (or any cake for that matter) so my baking brain is rusty. If it helps, I’m planning a cookies and cream filling.... any thoughts?

I would not use black food color -- I would use black cocoa powder -- the kind they make oreos out of -- you can get it on amazon -- other than that I don't have a black velvet recipe per se --

best to you

I never heard of black velvet, but I would bake a chocolate cake using Hersey's Special Dark Cocoa, which is almost black all by itself (and easy to find at the grocery), and add a little black gel color to bring it up to black.  The cake will be so dark from the cocoa, little food coloring is necessary to make it true black.  I do it with fondant and modeling chocolate all the time.

K8 and Sandra are probably right.   I have never done velvet cakes - well that I can remember right off - but from what I have read/heard a red velvet has *very little* choco in the recipe so follow Sandra's advice.
