Book Cake Without Using Fondant...can It Be Done???

Good Evening,

I had a customer call me today asking if I can make a cake that looks like a closed book.   She really does not want the cake covered in fondant.  I explained to her that it's more aesthetically pleasing to be done in fondant, but she had her mind made up.  

So, my question is, can it be done and still look good?  Any tips on how to get super sharp edges like you would with fondant?  How do you get the look of the book cover "hanging over" the pages?

could you use modeling chocolate instead of fondant......

Hummmmm I've done a few books in b'cream but they were open.   Just thinking it could be done but as you pointed out it won't look as nice.  Would have to get the b'cream as smooth as humanly possible and pipe the edge w/a smallish round tip - maybe 3, 4 or 5 depending on your pressure.  I could use a 3 my pressure was soo heavy :)  Use a comb on the sides of the 'sheet' cake to make it look like pages.  Be sure to round the one edge some that represents the spine - and make a slight trough like a book has been opened.  Having a book in front of you to refere to while working sure helps :)

you could also use a large rose tip and pipe the thick edge out over the pages to be the rim of the book cover --  then *pat down the join -- it could be done with a spatula on a non-crusting icing but easy peasy with a crusting one -- 

*pat down using a super clean smooth towel all folded up or some people use viva paper towel -- but I always fold them up so I have soft thick thing to pat down & out the stray icing marks -- one poster on here used a sponge paint roll -- you gotta let the icing crust a bit -- not all the way -- no worries

I always used the tines of a fork to make the pages

You could put a rope of modeling chocolate around the top edge for form the overhang and frost right over the top of it.
