I'm making a cake like this.

Gardener's cake

It's going to be a lemon cake and the customer doesn't like chocolate so I can't use chocolate cake crumbs for soil. My flowers aren't wired so I think I should make the cake with a mound on top covered in brown coloured buttercream and maybe some kind of crumbs for soil.

It's to serve 12. I can't decide what size to make the cake and  whether to make it with tapered sides like a flower pot or straight sides. I like the wood effect so I think i'll do individual panels to cover it.

And finally I've been given free reign on the colours. It's for a lady's 60th birthday.

Any advice would be appreciated.

12 servings is a 6" cake

How about crumbled/ground up gingerbread cookies for the dirt?  I like the pink color and the wood grain.  Can't wait to see the finished product.

My first thought was graham crackers for the dirt.  The sides do not appear to be tapered in this picture, more like a barrel.  Since you like the "boards" and plan to panel, I think it would look great to leave the sides straight.

One other thing you could use for 'dirt' is brown sugar.  Maybe a mixture of 2 or 3 of the suggestion would look good.

Yes, I've used brown sugar, both dark and light and even whole wheat flour for sand.
