Just wanting to know if anybody had any hints/tips on covering a 16" square cake in fondant.

I have covered cakes in fondant before (no bigger than 8" though) i'm more of a buttercream sort of person.

Also any tips on putting a smash cake on top of a normal cake, should i put together for customer or have them attatch it themselves.

Im going to try attach a picture of intended cake (different figurines and colours and details), the cake on the bottom is 16" and the 'bomb' on top is a smash cake 8" in diameter.

ThankyouCovering 16" Cake With Fondant for anything you can help with

You could cover each side and top separately with fondant so that way you aren't having to roll out a ton of fondant large enough to cover the cake in one go.  Doing each side and top separately, I think, would just be a bit more manageable and would probably save you from a ton of screaming, tears and hair pulling :)  Here is a video that shows you what I am talking about...

As for the smash cake, I would just assemble it how it should look and then explain to your client how it is attached and how they can easily dismantle it when it comes time to do the smashing.  Then again I have only ever seen the smash cake separate from the main cake.

I do square tiers just as stated above.  It is not hard to get the seams to blend together and look nice and sharp.  If it were my cake, I would place the smash cake myself to be sure it was properly positioned over the supports in the bottom tier.  You do need to put a small cake board underneath your smash cake to rest on the supports.  It can easily be covered by your other decorations, even the camouflage pattern.
