Hi!
I have an order for a baby shower cake and and unsure what sizes to make. They want it to feed around 40 people and want a 2-tier design. I usually bake my tiers 3 layers tall because I like the taller look. By the time I level them and stack the tiers are somewhere between 4 and 6 inches tall. I have a hard time using traditional cake serving charts because they are based on 2 in layers and a maximum height of 4 inches per tier. I was curious if anyone else had this trouble and what servings charts or ideas you could recommend. Thanks in advance!
If you are cutting your 3 layered cake the same as you would a 2 layer cake, then the serving charts that base their numbers off of a 2 layer cake would still apply for your cake. These charts are telling you how many slices you can get out of a certain size (meaning circumference) cake regardless of height because if you cut a 1"x2" slice from a 8" round that is either 4" or 6" tall you will still only get 24 pcs from that cake. KWIM?
But if you are making a 6" tall cake but it has been separated in half by a cardboard round essentially making two 3" tall cakes then you would get double the amount of servings for that size cake. So if you have an 8" round cake that is 6" tall and that height is made by two 3" high cakes then you would get 48 servings instead of 24.
Hopefully that makes sense :)
