So my husband and I moved back to my home state in August, and I thought I could do some cakes for extra money. I've only had one since then-back in September for a friend of mine. But since then, crickets. I put the word out on FB and put some business cards up; there's no bakery in town any more either so there isn't a lot of competition. And I can do other things besides cake, of course. I live in a rural area near some larger towns; I get it, nobody has any money and nobody wants to pay for things. But is it normal to hear nothing for several months at first? I'm not looking for advice or making excuses, I'm just frustrated and venting.
I am not in business, but even my family is reluctant to ask me to do cakes and I don't even charge them, so I am no help.
Have you tried taking small samples to places like the tellers at the bank you use or local beauty shops or church? Any chance you get to show off your talent is worthy of a decorated cupcake, cookies or cake :) And when you know of someone having a special event maybe offer to make them a cake.
