I've only ever done 1 multiple tiered cake before and I didn't use proper dowels for it.

I was looking at the pack of 50 hollow 5mm dowels in the link above. The price just seems too good to be true. I don't really know what I'm doing so can anyone advise whether these dowels would do the job? Any negatives to using these or recommendations for a different type of dowel?

Thank you!

Plastic drink straws would work.  I used them in this cake:  https://www.cakecentral.com/gallery/i/1358647/stacked-butteercream-rounds    I usually just get mine from fast food places like McD's.  I'll pick up a handfull and ask if it's all right to take a few and have never been denied:)  Then are tough, sturdy and work great.  Cakes much bigger than this probably need pillars.

I use the plastic dowels. My current ones I need to cut with a serrated knife but my preferred ones are ones I can just cut with scissors.

Nothing wrong with the Maccy D straws though! I've done that before when I've run out of the dowels   :)
