Hi! I've been asked to make a cake similar to this one, but in 2 tiers. I'm planning to make them 6" and 9".

I normally use about 3 cups of icing to fill and frost a 6" and about 5 cups for a 9", with a smooth finish to go under fondant. How much extra should I be making for all these frills?

Also how would you make the last colour on the bottom? The bright coral one? I was thinking an orange base and keep adding hot pink to it. I do feel like the reflection off the base is giving it an added brightness.

I would guess one batch of American Buttercream made with 2 lbs. of sugar would be just enough.   I don't know how many cups that makes but I can ice & decorate those sizes w/one batch of this recipe:    https://www.cakecentral.com/recipe/22469/2-icing     As for the color I would go gently with both colors - the orange & pink.  It's best to stop before it gets where you want it because it will continue to color once it sits for a couple of hours.  You won't use very much of it because the coral fades as it moves up which meant you will make maybe 2 or 3 ruffles, then add some white to lighten it, make 2 or 3 more ruffles, add more pink or lavendar to start it going to lavendar.

Thanks kakeladi! I think the recipe you linked to will come out to about 6 to 8 cups of frosting. Sounds just about right!

Understood about the colours: easy does it. But do you think orange and pink is the best way to approach coral? Should I start with peach instead or what??

I have a question. Sometimes I see decorators talk about how many "cups" of frosting or filling they use for cakes, and I don't understand how you get an idea of that. Do you actually scoop frosting with measuring cups? I've been weighing everything since I started baking so I don't measure much of anything except the small stuff anymore. And with frosting, for example, I know by weight how much my recipes make and how many batches it takes to do different projects (ex. 1 batch to frost two dozen cupcakes, 2 batches to frost an 8" round, 3 if it has a lot of colors/piping), but I couldn't even tell you how many cups that all is.

@cake monster i get what you mean. I literally did measure out how many cups of frosting 1 batch of my recipe makes back in the beginning. That's because I used to use the wilton cake serving chart as a guide and they tell you in cups approximately how much frosting you'd need for each sized cake.

So yeah, I just made up a batch and put it in a measuring cup to see how much it was. And then the same as you said: 1 batch for this, batch and a half for that, etc. I also know how much it weighs because I actually measure out the ingredients by weight. But I guess I'm just used to referring to the quantities in cups since that's how I started out.

If you think the peach is nearer to the end color you want - yes.  In fact depending on the right shade/tone it may be all you need......just more of it?  That's really I hard one to guess with out seeing.
