Succulents? Fondant, Gum Paste, Modeling Chocolate, Whichever

Has anyone made any for a cake? I'm not that artistically inclined but my sister loves succulents and I'm making her birthday cake next week. I've been watching tutorials but there seems to be an enormous range in materials, tools, and techniques. I'm not great with a piping bag (shaky hands) but playing with fondant or something seems more forgiving?
I always worked with fondant - usually strengthened w/Tylose. It seems easy for me. From the quick search I just did on google it would be easy to make them. Find a leaf pattern and cut 100s of leaves and stick them together w/gum glue intoi a rose looking creation. Use a small ball of fondant to sick them on/into. Really noi special tool,s would be needed....just knife or similur to cut the leaves out with.
Go to http://bit.ly/cakestyle she has several succulent cakes.
Yeah, they don't look tooooo difficult for a beginner. I definitely don't need to go as far as making the whole cake look like a succulent - it's just cream cheese frosting. I think succulents would like nice on that, esp since I have one of those tree trunk cake stands. Wish me luck as this will also be my first two tier cake! 9 inch and 6 inch. I"m thinking a few on top, one in the middle and two at the base. So, like 7 or 8 total?
Fondant with Tylose would work, so would gum paste, but for succulents and since this is your first time, I recommend you use modeling chocolate. My very first foray into modern cake decorating was making roses from modeling chocolate. Absolutely no tools required. Just shape the petals with your fingers and it sticks to itself, so no edible glue required. Since succulents are naturally fleshy, they would be a perfect choice for modeling chocolate (white, of course).
