Anyone successfully made a skimmed/naked dummy cake? Not totally naked sides, but a thinly scraped layer of buttercream or royal. My problem is that the polystyrene is stark white, of course, so I need to determine the best way to fake a baked white layer looking cake underneath the thin, almost see-through layer of icing. I've tried staining the polystyrene with airbrush color (brown) to give the impression of cake, but it never fully dries into the poly so the color is staining the icing as I ice the cake.
My next attempt will be with a brown permanent marker, but again, would like to make it as realistic looking as I can, so can't be too uniformly brown all over, know what I mean?
But was wondering if anyone had any tried and true tips for a skimmed dummy cake?
I've never made one and don't plan to, but if I wanted to create a near naked cake from dummies, I would first cover the dummies in a tan fondant, slightly lighter than a real baked cake, then add a light texture to the sides to simulate real cake and shade with an airbrush or (in my case, no airbrush) petal dusts mixed with alcohol. Let dry completely before frosting. That should work.
I agree w/Sandra. I would either w/a very thin fondant. You tried to 'dirty up' the styro but how long did you leave it before icing it? Maybe you need to let it dry much longer. I know when I had my shops styro after a while naturally get yellowed/dirty but in a very uneven way.
