I have a customer who wants me to make a 40th bday cake for his wife. This is for next weekend so not much time to prepare. He says she loves her cowboy boots, wine, and diamonds. My idea is to make 3d cowboy boots both standing up or one standing and one laying across the other and then a wine bottle- laying on the board or maybe the top of it sticking out of one boot and maybe a happy 40th birthday out of crystals that I will buy from etsy. This will just be on a stand on the cake board. Does anyone have any other ideas? I am not an expert at making 3d designs and have no idea on the structure for the cowboy boot, but would love to knock this customer's socks off since I could possibly get more clients from this one cake. Any advice on design and structure?? Thanks in advance!
since you only have one week i'd suggest you do something that is well within your skill set and do it wonderfully for them -- for example do a small tier cake and add handmade boots and wine bottles -- little ones you can just mold -- you just don''t have enough time to learn a whole new thing just in this one week kwim --
i would diamond stud the boots and hang a tennis bracelet around the wine bottle --
i actually have a pair of blinged out cowgirl boots -- if you do a search for "embellished cowgirl boots" you get a lot of inspiration --
best to you
K8, you always have good ideas. I, too like the idea of the diamond stud on boots and tennis bracelet around the wine bottle!! I am only a hobby cake so hopefully others here will have some more ideas too but K8's idea would look cool!!
thank you, remnant, cake decorator supreme, right back atcha
I also go along w/K8's suggestions. But..... Years ago I had a book that showed how to make a boot using - if I remember correctly - just one (or 2) 9x13 cake(s). It was not 3-d but impressive. Sorry I cannot remember name or author of book but maybe - just maybe someone on here will reconize this description. Here is a pic of said boot: https://www.cakecentral.com/gallery/i/1332908/2-d-cowboy-boot The upper part is one cut; then bottom of the boot from the remaining cake.
Thanks for the ideas! I think you're right K8- I don't have enough time to try to play around with something i've never done before. What should I use for the "diamonds" on the boot? or the diamond bracelet? I also don't have time to get a label for the wine bottle printed out. May just have to make one myself even though it would be nice to have a label printed out. Have you seen the cake that looks like it has rope around the cake and then a cowboy boot on top? I thought that was nice, but I am not sure how to incorporate the wine bottle. http://cakesdecor.com/cakes/186757-cowboy-boot
i don't know about your client but while i have blingy cowgirl boots i'm far from a cowgirl --
like i said, make a petite tier cake -- the wine and boots can be made similar in height so just place one on one side one on the other -- or write "happy vino-day" on the label -- the boots can go on the cake board, the wine can go on the top or the ledge if you do a tier cake --
it's the b-day person that makes the cake gel -- it might seem like disparate objects but they all make sense to the peeps and the honoree -- never ever be hesitant to personalize a cake -- i mean maybe a horseradish manufacturer likes to play frisbee golf, loves lace, gold watches and teddy bears-- slap it on there and roll with it -- your clients will love it --
my local cake shop sells edible bling -- hope you can find some -- if not get something from the craft store for the bracelet and use gold and silver trim on the boots -- you can do gold studs too -- you can actually pipe piping gel on top of silver dots and get a diamond-y look -- small small small dots
