Should I Still Use Supports ?

I'm making a cake soon, oh actually tomorrow (OMG) and I'm wondering if I need to bother with using straws.
The cake will be a "mountain" so my plan is to have two layers of 12 inch and two layers of 9 inch on top of that, and carved out to make a sort of mountain shape. No idea if it will work out like in my head, probably not hahaha. This is a gift for a friend, a mountain biking cake (I made the figures already)
My question is, normally with a two tier (well I've only made two of them ever) I put a cardboard circle under the smaller one then a bunch of straws in the bottom. But since with this cake it wouldn't really matter if there was a little sinkage since its just going to be a sort of lumpy mountain, and the bottom is 12 inches, could I just not do the straws or am I asking for trouble ?!
The reason I'd like not to is because the party is a late evening one and since I have little kids its possible I won't still be there when they get around to the cake. Of course, I'll explain about the straws but people may be a little drunk lol.
I'll probably do the cake tomorrow morning, so it will likely sit for about 6 -7 hours. Then it's a 1 mile drive to drop it off.
Hi @Coffeelover77 ,
Since I am a chicken and always overkill, I would add the cake board and straws, just to be safe. Make your cake board for the 9" tier smaller than the cake (like 8" or 7") so when you carve, you won't have to try and cut through the cake board. Recognize the voice of experience here?? Haha. Just be sure the straws are under the cake board, since it is a bit smaller than the cake layers.
Don't worry about your friends freaking out because of the straws, if you have to leave. Just explain to them that there is a cake board in the middle and cut the top half of the mountain first. Once the top has been served, remove the cake board and start serving the bottom half...with the straws. Warn them that the straws are there for support and to just remove them as they cut the cake.
you need support for every four to six inches of cake
Thanks everyone! I suppose I'll do the straws to be safe!
thanks for the tip about the smaller cake circle @SandraSmiley ! I will cut one of my nine inch ones down a little !
