Imprinting On Fondant After Cake Has Been Covered?

Hello All,
I'm new to the forum, although I have been following the discussions here for some time now. Always great tips to be found.
I am making a goth-style wedding cake for a friend (yes, goth), which will be covered in black fondant. They wanted a roccocco style imprint on it, to look like wallpaper. I found a nice fondant mat, tested it on the black fondant, and it looks great.
Now I'm stuck with the dilemna though: I can't imprint the fondant before covering the cake or it will skew the pattern, but can I imprint the fondant after it has been covered? won't I need the fondant to be soft (and then the icing underneath might get soft). you need quite a bit of force to imprint from what I can tell, which will be difficult if the cake is covered.
I also have to travel 4 hours by car to bring the unstacked cake, so I'm panicking a little bit and would be so thankful for any advice. Thank you!![]()
No, I really don't think you can emboss the fondant after it has been put on the cake. The only thing I know you can do is emboss it first, then try to gently place it on the cake. If the project were mine, I would use a stencil on the already covered cake instead of embossing. A stencil would probably give more of a "wallpaper" look, anyway.
Since the pattern has to be vertical, I can't imprint on a round piece of fondant. so what I am going to try, is to first imprint the fondant but then wrap the cake in 2 pieces. I saw it on a blog, and it looks like it should work. I think piping would cover the edges. This way I can have my vertical lines which I need, and I don't even want the imprint on the top of the cake, only on the sides. I'll see if i can post a picture when done in case anyone else has a similar dilemna.
