Hi all,

I'm new to Cake Central!

Ive recently made a cake for my daughters birthday! A Unicorn Cake!!! Eughr! It really does seem to be in thing at the moment.

I have never made a cake with anymore than two layers, and I have certainly never covered one in Buttercream. Let alone pipe with all the different nozzles! I'm mostly hear to learn and pick up tips for my next one, as I truly love and enjoy baking. I'd love to expand my skills set.

any critique/ tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance!

For your first time I think your cake is cute!!! Good job!!!

The more you practice the better you will get!!! When I look at my first cakes verses the latter cakes the piping just gets better and better!!! Congratulations on a job well done!!!

Very nice work - especially for one's 1st work.   I started my decorating career way back in the 1980s and love working w/b'cream.   Only because you asked for help this is being offered (not critizem, but hopefully helpful tips).

Cover you cake boards.  It looks like you just put your cake on a 'naked' board :)  You can use freezer wrap/paper, or plastic table cloth or fondant or even shelf liner.   I usually cut the paper 2-4" larger than the board, then fold the extra under and tape it down w/masking tape.

It looks like your b'cream needs more mixing - try mixing it on low for at least 10 minutes so there are no holes in it.  Then use a turntable and bench scraper to make that icing as smooth as can be.  That shouldn't take more than 5 minutes when the icing is the right consistency (thin).  Here's a great icing recipe:  http://www.cakecentral.com/recipe/22469/2-icing

Not sure if you wanted your base border to have those points on each ball but if so you did a good job of getting each one the same size.  If you are trying to make 'balls' then here's the process:  squeeze, then stop all pressure while keeping your hand in place and count to 3 before lifting the tip away by making a 'comma' motion.  That shoud wipe away any tip that might have formed.  It's very important to be sure you have stopped all pressure before moving on.

As remnant3333 said, practice, practice, practice.  Maybe invest in a styrofoam dummy.  Once you finish a design, take a picture, then scrape the icing off and start another one.  Or you can practice on a bowl or pan.  Good luck.   You are well on your way to a good career :)

I can't add a thing to what @kakeladi ‍said!  Your cake is beautiful and you can already pipe rings around me (glad someone invented gum paste!)!

Thank you very much! That's very kind of you. I agree the more I practice the easier the process will be! Thank you again

Hi Kakeladi,

Thank you for your critique, I really appreciate the time you have spent to type that for me.

In relation to the little balls at the bottom, I was trying to achieve a little point on the end, however, I love your tips for making a perfect little ball, so will be deffo trying that.

I agree with the cake board - I wasn't sure how to even achieve the board being covered, and decided this was a bit beyond me. But, your tips have given me something to work with so thank you.

As for the career, this is literally just a hobby I wouldn't dream of selling on my cakes lol I don't feel confident enough that someone would be happy with it. I'm actually a teacher..... I think I'm best sticking with my day job haha
