Hope it's OK to ask for some feedback. I can only see the faults in my cakes and friends and family only give me really positive feedback so I would really like some less biased opinions please.

And what do you see wrong??   They look very good to me.......and really I was trying to find something worng :)   O.K......on the boxing ring:  The left side top edge is slightly jagged.....in the corners.  And on the treasure chest, one of the blk bands on the top is not perfect........BUT HONESTLY.....I don't think anyone but another decorator would even notice those.   Really, go look through almost anyone's album on this site and you will find similar 'faults'.  We all have them.........

unless you are in a competition, cakes are to celebrate and reflect the guests and the person being celebrated -- it's not about being meticulously exactingly everlastingly perfect -- it's an edible artistic creation -- it's food --

i too looked at your two cakes and didn't see anything noteworthy that needs improving --

when we first start making cakes  it can be shocking when we get it right -- some people get it right their first time out too --

but you are fine -- lighten up -- have some fun with it -- you made two real nice pieces -- learn to pipe some roses and to write in buttercream -- look forward --  all good --

best to you

'best' but don't go crazy with it sunglasses kwim?

Thank you both for your lovely comments. I forgot to say that I did these for friends who paid me so I wanted them to be perfect. They were very happy but I feel like I need to step up my game if people are paying.

Roses and piping are next on my list to master.

If t hose two are examples of what you do (al)most of the time, you can stop being so hard on yourself......they are very worthy of your being paid for them:)

there is no perfect -- stop that -- you're making yourself crazy -- it's beautiful food -- it provides a blessing to the recipient and all who get to see and partake -- they are real real good -- not perfect - perfect is not a viable goal -- make it great and keep it happy -- happy for yourself too --

I agree with kakeladi and K8memphis, there is not a thing for you to worry about.  For sure, they do not look like "beginner" cakes!  Your first cake has those beautiful vertical stripes and they look wonderful and are NOT easy to do!  I recently did a cake for my best friend's 50th wedding anniversary, three tier (top two tiers double barrel), geode cake and the icing decided to detach itself from the cake causing the fondant to sag and bulge.  My heart was broken and I was so disappointed, but guess what - everyone loved it and didn't see a thing wrong.  I will admit that it did taste good, but we do let flaws overwhelm us.  Carry on, my dear!  You are doing beautifully!
