Has anyone ever done a wedding cake that was partially covered with buttercream and partially naked?  I have a bride that wants buttercream ruffles on the lower layer(s) and naked on the top tiers.

I would suggest making up a sample 2 tier cake showing how it would work.   Could be dummies.  That way both of you could decide if it looks o.k.   You might have to guide her away from that look.   I'm thinking it will be o.k. if the 'naked' tiers have a very light crumb coat.   This is something you are going to have to decide if you want to do even if you don't like the looks.

I've done many, many wedding cakes. Some brides are open to suggestion (some actually prefer being told what to choose), but most have specific ideas and are determined to have the cake of their dreams. It's our job to make suggestions, and our job to execute the most visually appealing cake possible given our clients' preference. Personally, I don't care for most of the naked cakes I've seen, but naked cakes can really be quite lovely.

I think this could look really lovely, especially if the top tier is more a semi-naked rather than a full naked. Is your bride wanting any other decoration like fruit or flowers? Could have a really nice rustic look to it I think.
