Does anyone know how much weight a cake drum will hold? I currently use plywood for stacked cakes, but would like to find out more about drums, especially the 10, 12, 14 and 16 inch. Can anyone help or direct me to where to look? I haven't found much searching google. Thanks.
Honestly, that's a tough question to answer...there are so many different brands out there that it would probably just be speculation.
I can, however, speak for the 1" thick My Thick Boards that I buy from www.cakethings.com. I use them as the base for all my wedding cakes and have assembled up to 5 tiers on them with not problems!
By the way...I order the 1 inch thick bases with the 1/2 inch hole in the center. I measure and cut my center dowel to about 2 inches less than the total height of the cake, sharpen the top end, then glue it into the center hole of the base. I cut a 1/2 inch hole in the center of all my cake foamcore boards used to support the cake tiers before icing the cakes on them. Dowel tiers as normal.
When ready to stack, I pipe about 6 evenly spaced 1/2 inch mounds of buttercream on top of the base board about 4 inches from the center to act a glue and prevent the lowest tier from being able to turn...though its very unlikely it would.
I lower tier after tier (my base tier is also on a separate cake board - foamcore 3/8 thick) down over the center dowel. No need to worry about centering the tier on top of each other...it's automatic!!
I've used this method for years. You can order the 3/8 inch thick tier boards from them too with the center hole...but I usually just cut my own tier boards...I just order the base boards.
