I want to make my mother in law a cake but we have to travel to her house for 4 hours will a buttercream iceing and marshmallow fondant last in a car that long if so tips on how to make this happen

Use Charlotte's Whipped Cream Buttercream (Google it.)

Should be fine as long as the car is cool and the cake isn't exposed to the sun

I have taken b'cream decorated cakes on 6 hrs trips w/o a problem.   As Elizabethscakecreations said, make sure it is in a covered box, then cover that w/one of those windshield silver shields  and keep the car cool.
