I am looking to start a small home based cake business and was wondering if anyone had any advice on starting out? I need to purchase some more supplies and was wondering what are the most common sizes/shape of cakes you sell? I won't be doing wedding cakes at first because im not quite comfortable with them yet. Just looking to do cakes for birthdays, graduation, holidays ect. Thanks in advance!

I found 10" rounds; 12x8 sheet cakes were the most popular in my area.  Some 8" x4" also so two 8" round pans is advisable.  Next was 12"x16" (or 18") sheet pan (often refered to as a 1/2 sheet).  When I made sheet cakes I always split and filled them.  I know many decorators do not fill sheet cakes.  I definately recommend 2" deep pans.  Magic Line is a very good brand to go with but there are some new bands on the market now since I was an active decorator :)    Hope that helps.

How many servings do you say you can get out of a 8" or 10" round? I know going by standards it says about 15 for an 8" but I don't know anyone that gets that many lol!

Actually if you look at Wilton serving chart , which is standard, there should be 24 servings in 8" round.

The most needed  pans are 5", 6" 7" 8" round. Half sheet pan.

Also the more you charge for your cakes, the smaller size you are going to need.

Mine start at $75.00 for 8" and $120 for 2 tier, 7" & 5", so those  are the sizes I use the  most. Sometimes I get order for 10" rnd.

Do you usually make 2 or 3 layer rounds?

Magen whether one uses two or three layers depends on what depth each layer is, what you want the cake to look like and how many servings the order calls for.   Any size cake can be either 1, 2, or 3 layers.
