My cousin has asked me to make cupcakes for her gender reveal next weekend. I have never used fondant before and thought about buying pre-colored fondant, using a cookie cutter to cut out a cute little fancy-like circle, and then writing a question mark on top. My questions are: how long in advance can I make these little fondant circles? How far in advance can I place them on top of the buttercream frosting on top of the cupcakes?

Thanks!

You can make them now if you want.  Just keep them between plastic wrap, then store in a plastic bag.  They can be placed 24 hrs ahead, maybe longer but you don't want the cupcakes older than that before people eat them :)

could somebody please explain why fondant figures need drying???

I've been making a fondant lightning mcqueen over time ( when normal life allows), I've kept it wrapped in clingfilm every time after working on it and its stayed moist and workable throughout?

@AO.Cakes ‍ they need drying so that they can hold their shape and support themselves and anything else you place on top. A car is mostly pretty flat and doesn't have a lot of long thin parts sticking out unsupported, but imagine making a man holding his arm out or a flower. If the fondant is soft, the arm will fall and the petals will droop.

No problem! Glad I could help! Are your cupcake toppers 2D or 3D? Do any parts of them need to to stand unsupported?

I usually make my toppers a day in advance. They get stiff enough to hold their shape, but not super dry so they're impossible to eat.

If you're making Vader figures, I would make them at least 2 days in advance. If they're flat, then one day should be enough.
