My friend has asked me to make her wedding cake for 120 guests in April. She told me they won't be cutting into the cake or serving each other slices since one of them doesn't like cake. They will also be having an ice cream bar at the reception. I suggested a dummy cake but she insists on a real cake. Can anyone tell me what size tiers would be good for this amount of servings? I haven't been decorating in awhile and just can't get myself excited about making this cake. They also wants gumpaste tulips so I get to learn how make them since I can't find pre made tulips in her colors. I would also appreciate ideas for spring time cake flavors since all they could come up with was yellow cake with buttercream. Thank you.
For flavors, you could do something fruity for either the cake, filling, or frosting. Lemon, strawberry, peach, raspberry, etc., are all good options.
There are many good tables that will tell you how many cuts to expect out of each size tier depending on what shape that are. I suggest you look up the Wilton list and Earlene Moore's Both are good examples with differing amounts. I usually calcuated servings somewhere between the two :)
The suggestion of fruit flavors is good........lemon, strawberry, cherry (I just posted 3 cherry cake reciepes), white or yellow w/fruit fillings &/or icings are good choices.
The cake will be round I am just having trouble deciding on what sizes will look better. I am wavering between 12,9,6 or 14,10,6
i think a 13x10x7 gets you there, 'cause i think the 12x9x6 is the perfect size cake but too small for 120
but a 14x10x7 gives you a few extra servings
this cakulator thing is the bombshabomb:

i just don't think you could ever go wrong with strawberries in whipped cream for a filling
Thank you for all the help and finding the link for the clear pillars. Have you ever used Coast pillars before or vases, candlesticks to display tiers?
sure, you're welcome -- yes i've used coast and i've used odd things for pillars -- wine/champagne/shot glasses come to mind -- but i know there's been more -- when you use weird stuff you have to very confident it can assume the weight you're gonna put on it and that it will sit perfectly level -- because cakes be heavy and candles be light --
i spent a lot of time in the craft store one day going off on a wild tangent for a cake i was doing and at the end i realized i could not depend on this beautifully perfect array of candle chimneys and etc to hold up the dang cake -- so there's that too -- but some of it will -- i think you'd get better results with footed bowls turned upside down...if you can find the right kind -- i also like to use the footed plates upside down --
fun fun fun to put together a whole package of unique accessories for the cake --
would love to see your finished product and any other questions, fire away :)
The wedding theme is Beauty and the Beast so I thought it might be neat to use wide crystal candle sticks. I think I might stick with the 12,6,9 and make a sheet cake for additional servings. Maybe an 11x15. From what she told me the cake will just be for pictures since one of them doesn't like cake. They won't be cutting into the cake or feeding it to each other so I don't think I need to make them a huge cake.. She has all of these ideas of what she wants but trying to fit it all on the cake is almost impossible. She wants a stacked cake with Sugarveil lace appliques on the front with sparkly diamond ribbon around the bottom, edible diamonds with an assortment of gumpaste tulips. My dilemma is the tulips will cover up the Sugarveil. I am hoping I can talk her into using clear pillars and doing a 360 arrangement of flowers on the 12 and 9" tier. Then the lace and the ribbon won't be covered up. My other option is to use SPS plates and dowels to raise the two tiers up and fill in the space all the way around with tulips. I will be pitching my ideas to her hopefully by the end of the week. I asked them last week to provide me with color samples so I can start making the flowers and I'm still waiting. Thankfully the wedding isn't until the end of April. I do have another question for you. Have you ever applied the crystal frindge that hangs down from the separator plates and if so do you know of a good place to find some? Thank you for all of the help.
i did my best to avoid the hanging crystals due to the liability issue but i'm sure i've done it -- i would count them all and only use it if it was on one continuous strand -- i'd count them so the server could then count them before serving and make sure nothing got lost and possibly ingested --
what about mini tulips? or a cascade would work and still show the other decorations -- just a couple thoughts
and the diamonds will be pretty with a few mini tulips around -- might wanna set some diamonds on leaves or something too -- maybe
This is what I was talking about for the frindge beading that would be attached to the side of the cake drums and hang down. I have tried to find other patterns but not finding much except for on Ebay. Does anyone have any idea of where I might search?
i would say that these tiers are 4" difference for example 12x8x4 or 14x10x6
i would check at your local mega craft stores and fabric stores for more variety on the bling
K8 is problably right about the sizes in the pic but what you use depends on how many servings the client needs......I think you said 120? If I remember right a 14, 10, 6 would be about right.
