I've made and cooled a Yule Log cake using the NordicWare pan. Is it okay to put it back in the pan to support it while I cut the hump off the base? The decorative details are so precise, I don't want to crush them.  Thank you

Yes, it is. I've put cooled cakes back in pans of various sizes to do that. I clean and dry the pan first, so there is nothing to stick to.

Absolutely you can. I fill and crumb coat my cakes, then put them back in the same  cake pan, washed and cleaned of course. Liberally coat the pan with shortening. Then wrap well, the whole pan with cake, pop into freezer. I get an even cake, with perfect layers. Got the tutorial from Wicked Goodies website.

The pan does not even need to be "wahsed and cleaned" if it is the same cake that was baked in it:)  And you should not need to 'liberally coat w/shortening" either.  Just pop it back into the pan it came out of and you are fine.
