What Is An Alternative To Alcohol/vodka For Painting Cakes?

Hi, I've been loving painted fondant cakes at the moment; there's so much possibility with painting cakes. But to paint cakes, a fast drying medium like vodka is used. However, I'm not able to consume any alcohol of any type, and nor do I wish to use it. I was wondering what else I could use that wouldn't ruin the fondant, or make it too sticky or dissolve it. Would alcohol free vanilla extract work? Lemon juice? Any ideas would be appreciated.
Hi - the only other 2 things I know you can use is rose spirit and lemon extract - however I think they are both alcohol based?
Hi! Thanks for replying. I've had a look around and there are some alcohol free lemon extracts; do you think they would work as well? Your cake are gorgeous by the way!
Hi! I use alcohol-free extracts and they work great! On both royal icing and fondant.
bakemeenchanted- thanks for letting me know! I'd better get painting then, I can't wait!
I believe that as it dries, the alcohol evaporates. Once dry it is no longer present. I know that's the way it is when cooking with alcohol, (cooking as in heating it in some way) once cooked or baked the alcohol is no longer present.
for gold or silver you can mix it with a little bit of oil instead of alcohol. It actually paints smoother this way. Not sure if it will work for food colouring have yet to try it! :)
Vanitycakes.ca- is this gold or silver lustre dust? or the paint that you can dilute? I've just bought some silver edible dust which I was just going to dry dust on the cake, but if I mix it in with oil would that work better?
Sorry for the late reply - computer issues :-( Itsabakerslife. Wanted to see how you went with the alcohol free extracts?
i'm referring to the rolkem gold/silver comes in a powder form. You don't dust with it you mix it with alcohol (or oil) and paint on the cake :)
Cakesbyvivienne - I haven't tried it yet! life happened, well, customer drama, so I'm still yet to try it. I'll let you know soon as I do. x
Vanitycakes.ca - Thanks for letting me know! I'll have a look into those. x
