Its on in the UK - a new series started on Wednesday (yesterday) , Great British Bake Off. Basically they start off with 12 bakers, from varying backgrounds - in this series, there is a student, a retired headmistress, a teacher etc etc and they have to do 3 bakes per week including a technical challenge and a challenge set by the judges who are Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry, and are whittled down to a final 3 before the winner is selected just before Christmas. This must be the 6th or 7th series but they are popular viewing. Its on BBC1, but Ive just watched last nights episode again on replay as for various reasons I missed parts of last nights epiosde. I gather they are shown in the US but think its series we have already had in the UK.
Yes, we have just wrapped up Season 3 here in the States. It's aired on your local PBS station. If you missed it you can go here and watch: http://www.pbs.org/show/great-british-baking-show/
I just love this show.
I'm glad that you posted that link @Nancylou . We just discovered the show about halfway through the last season and really enjoyed them. It is the best show on baking that I've seen since the old Sunday cake show that went into the people's bakeries and watched them actually make real cakes for their customers.
This British Baking Show was very interesting and informative. The best part was how they blind tasted and judged all of the creations without knowing who did what. The two baker hosts Mr. Hollywood and Ms. Berry were superb hosts and judges. Hopefully they will have more of these shows on American tv soon.
Hey @MBalaska - I didn't know it was airing either until somebody started a thread about it here on Cake Central. I missed the first episode ... of course that was the one about cakes! I still have 4 episodes left to watch. Thank goodness for the DVR because the Olympics held me up a bit.
I completely agree with you about the hosts and judges, they are terrific and I can't imagine this show without any one of them. I actually stumbled upon it last year and was instantly hooked. Now that I found PBS.org I'm hoping to catch up. But keep your eyes open, because so far they seem to be airing them here - a season behind - but I am fine with that.
To our British cake friends - enjoy the new season, it sounds like another good one!
i so love this show! I love the hosts, the judges and the contestants! The American version just did not cut it. I was so happy with who won Season 3 - don't want to spoil it for those who haven't seen it yet! I love how supportive the contestants are of each other and even how the hosts try to help out although they have also caused some problems as well, but no one seems terribly upset. It really is educational because they bake things I've never heard of. it's not like the Food Network where they seem to love to make you bake with weird ingredients like make a cake with garlic and a garden hose!
Has anyone seen Bake Off Crème de la Crème? It's teams of professional pastry chefs in competition with each other. I totally love it because the technical skill is where I'm at and when things go wrong I am literally sitting on the edge of my seat biting my nails. My reaction provides more entertainment for my family than the show lol.
I used to love GBBO when it first started, very talented bakers and good presenters. It's really hyped up now by the tabloids and "winners" seem to be picked in advance now by them and the FB and Twitter mob. Sorry, it's got that dreadful "Strictly" and "X" factor vibe to it now, Mary Berry is coining it in and good luck to her but its so far removed from her Aga days which I remember with fondness. It's a matter of time until someone's boob falls out "accidentally". I like the sound of the Crème de la Crème show whitechoc.
