Hello,

I'm making a baby shower cake for a party of 50 people. My friend wants the cake to be 3 tiers... She also wants them to be on the higher side.

What pan sizes would be recommended? I'm not great at determining tier sizes without being able to visualize it :(

I also know that we will probably have a lot of cake left over but I would like to try and minimize that as much as possible. Should I use a dummy for 1 tier?(I've never used one before...)

Thanks friends!

A 6, 8, 10" would give you 53 servings by Earlene's serving chart

74 by industry standard chart -- if you do the 8" middle tier out of foam you'll be right on the money with 50 and you can make that extra tall without using more cake --

dallas foam is a great place to buy dummies if you don't already have a place --

otherwise a 9x7x5 with a foam 5" is also 50 -- and you can use an extra foam circle under any of the cake tiers -- the same size as that tier -- all iced together like it was the same cake -- to give the look of taller tiers without using additional cake

Thank you! Great tips. I also didn't think of using foam to add height- that's a perfect solution! If I do the 10, 8, and 6 do you have suggestions for how high I should make each tier? They don't need to be super high but we would like more of  a stacked cylinder kind of look rather than a flatter/fatter appearance.

I suggest using foam to make the 10" a total of 8" tall -10x4 cake with 10x4 foam.  The 8"x2 (1 layer) cake w/4"s of foam and top it  off w/a 6x4 cake.  That should give you the look you are wanting w/some but not a whole lot of extra cake.
