Cake Transport Via Airplane

I need some help. I need to take a cake on an airplane from Virginia to Las Vegas in a couple of weeks for a conference. I will be a round double cake maybe 10 or 12 inches. I have to decorate it before I go because I will not have access to a kitchen when I get there and would be much to busy to do it anyway. What would you be better BC or MMF. If anyone has done this lately and could tell me how it went or if it is even doable that would be awesome...

Either bc or mmf would be ok, as long as you have a sturdy box. I would make the cake my carry on. You should be able to fit a 10-12" cake under the seat in front of you. I wouldn't trust the overhead bin. A sturdy box would be the thing I would worry about, not the icing. I will have to go through the x-ray and everything. I hope this helps! thumbs_up.gif

I just went from Texas to California with two single tier cake dummies and a topper in July. One dummy was covered in BC and the other in fondant. They both did OK. I know they put the cake boxes through the x-ray machine when I went through security, but you might be able to ask them to hand scan the cake.

On one leg of my flight, I was there really early and asked if the flight attendant could put the dummies in the closet that they have in front of the plane. That worked well. On the second leg, a wheelchair was in the closet and they didn't have room for the boxes. They did put them in the overhead bin. (Someone tried to cram their jacket in on top of the boxes and I had to ask them to please stop. I carried the topper of gumpaste flowers in an 8 inch cake box on my lap the whole way. I would probably do that with your cake if I were you, if I wanted to be really sure it got there OK. (Isn't there some saying abut suffering foryhour art...?)

If I were you, I would call the airline and ask them ahead of time if they could suggest how best you do this. They may be able to put a message in your reservation that says you would like to have space in the closet if possible. I'd call now and also the day before your flight. I've been a travel agent for about 12 years and you can never from one minute to the next what the airlines will do. Good Luck!

I transported an 11x15x2 cake and a cupcake cake (28 cupcakes) in regular cake boxes like you would find at Michaels not Too long ago. I stacked the cupcake cake on top of The other box And held it. When I got To security I told them To be very careful and not to bump them because I have cakes in the boxes. Then I put them on The belt and let them go through one by one. They were very understanding about it. Once I got on the plane, I slide them under The Seat in front of me. The lady sitting next to me let Me use the space in front of her for one cake. Yes the guy sitting in front of Me tried To cram his briefcase under The seat and I told him he would have to use an overhead because I have cakes under The seat. That's probably the only thing you will have to watch out for. People bumping them.

A few years back I had a bigger cake that I placed in the overhead bin. The Flight attendant gave me a bunch of pillows and blankets to pack around the box. It arrived just fine. No damage.

By the way, all the cakes were covered in BC and fondant will travel just as well if not better.
