How Much Should I Charge For This Cake
Decorating By kolabe79 Updated 20 Apr 2014 , 11:22am by nancylee61
You charge what you're comfortable charging. But are we missing a vital point here - you said it's for a "Friend". Which means that she asked you to do it so that she can save a boat load of money. If you're invited to the wedding - which you probably are, you can give her a portion of the cost in a note in her wedding card and call a small portion of it as a gift. Speaking for myself at $5.00 a serving, I personally would charge $1250, then I would probably throw in the printout because I'm a good person. "-) One other issue, how good are you. Will this be your first wedding cake or are you a seasoned professional (my feeling is that you're a casual baker). And the piano keys will be a lot easier to put into place if you construct them on a waxed paper lined cookie sheet and place in the freezer for 5 minutes, Prevents distortion.
ACakefat AZCoturue you guys sound harsh. I was thinking about posting few of my cakes that I made and decorated but then I thought I don't need to prove you or anybody what can I do. You all were started and I am sure you all were going through what I am going now. This forum was creted to HELP not to judge or sound like a bully. I am ful time in school and full time employed with a family and plus have time to do cakes. But since I am new in pricing them fo though I might take an opportunity and use help of the members in this forum. I got helpful answered which I am grateful for but this critisizm is not good although it was presented in kindest way. Sorry but if you can't help or give right suggestion then do not criticize or judge. Thank you.

So prove them wrong and post your cakes. CLients will judge you, need to toughen up if you want to sell cakes.

You are totally unfair to the members who responded to your request for help.
You just joined and asked for help and members responded to you with suggestions. Sorry if you don't like what longtime members have written. Next time I suggest you start the thread by telling us what you want to hear.

I guess you didn't have a chance to read to whom I was complying in all fairness.
Yes, I read the names of those you were criticizing. They are longtime members who help many, many. many folks. It just really irritates me when they come here to help and are met with rude remarks.
Does someone need to go on the "no advice for you" list?

Sorry but I don't think they were harsh at all, I think what was written was written nicely but clearly. People are trying to help one another on this site not put one another down. We all understand what it's like starting out - we've all been there which is why we want to help. Please don't take sincere advice so personally. Use it as a way to grow and learn - for which reason it was given.
better to receive clear cut honest information than sugar coated pretty and insidious false praise.
AKolabe79, you asked a question, they answered. They were kind and went easy on you in my opinion. I think you're being unreasonable asking a question on an open forum then objecting to the answers people were kind enough to give you. And to say to people "do not critisize or judge" is downright rude. I'm a hobby baker who's quite new to this site and I'm addicted already. I've learnt loads in the short time I've been here and I'm grateful to everybody who's ever replied to one of my posts.
OP- I guess you didn't read about the 'nicest, kindest possible way' to say something.
Please stop misusing the word "bully". It's offensive.
Also- I cannot believe that you are a real poster now. I think you're just baiting people, asking how to price a wedding cake that you don't know how to make or price, not being able to spell anything but claim you're in school and then using 'whom' with a preposition. Shady.
Oh and then of course, throwing the word "bully" out there and getting mad when people give you decent, kind advice but it's not sugar coated bs. My conclusion- you're just instigating.
Good luck on your 'cake'.

A[quote name="cakefat" url="/t/773779/how-much-should-i-charge-for-this-cake/30#post_7506080"] yep, missing their troll. I think that they went to away school in a far off land. [/quote Just proving my point that some people do what you are doing. At least English is not my first language but still I know how to get along.
AWell, your English classes will have that all sorted out soon enough. I have lived in an area that has a HUGE number of Spanish speakers, and you'd think by now that I would be fluent. Nope. I'm kind of ashamed of that.
AI just made a cake for 200 people, it was a gift. Never, ever again! It was 4 tiers, 14, 12, 10, 8 inch tiers, it weighed at least 80 pounds, it cost me at least $150 and took me a week to make. Literally. A least 40 hours, as I am baking from home with one oven.
Either don't do it, or charge at least your ingredients. I wouldn't do it again.
