I finally tried one, they are really easy. I read a suggestion to make them on a sheet protector so that when it is in the freezer it will stay flat. It worked really good for me. I did the 49er cake in my photos! Just make sure you do not have a helper near =)

Good Luck!!

I've kept one in the freezer for a few weeks and it was just fine. I would say up to a month or two even - just as long as you could keep BC in the freezer.

I have read that to avoid sticking to use a bc recipe that uses butter. I guess the all shortening ones stick. Also, use a sheet protector instead of paper that is suppose to help too.

dshlent. i read the directions not as you are to fill them in with stars but lines, sort of like painting. I could be wrong though because i have never tried this and will be soon.

After filling it in (lines are easier than stars), I carefully lift it to check if there are any unfilled spots. If so, fill in with more icing, or use a toothpick to move icing to better fill in corners or tight spots. Then I usually do a final coat the same color as the cake icing, and gently smooth that layer, being careful not to disturb the picture. Then I pick it up carefully and let it drop on the counter several times, to get all the icing to settle, so you don't see the fill in lines. Then freeze. and when ready to place on cake, I check to be sure the back of the transfer is flat, and if not add icing to any low spots so the transfer will sit level on the cake top. Then hold over cake top, place, carefully peel off paper.

I have a question about it though. Wouldn't the transfer smear when you put the final coat of frosting on the back?

It will smear if your transfer layer is very thin or if you spoon on the icing or smooth too hard. I pipe the icing on top of the picture - without a tip, and then gently smooth that with a small knife, being careful to not smear, but just smooth the top.

Okay, so how are you supposed to keep the black outline from smearing when filling in and smoothing the other colors? It seems so easy to smoosh it all together. Especially if there is a lot of outlining.

I have done this several times using shortening-only BC and plain old wax paper. The trouble that I have had with sticking comes when I hesitate putting it on the cake. I have to move quickly between taking the transfer out of the freezer, placing it on the cake and taking off the paper.

Look under the recipe section and type in Buttercream for the search. There are a couple there.

Okay, now "I" have a question. I'm wanting to do a Harley Davidson emblem with flames for a gentleman's 60th b-day. How far in advance can I place the fbct on the cake? His b-day is Mar 17. As a rule, I have the client pick the cake up the afternoon before the event since I do it at my church. Once it is at room temp, will the transfer colors run? What are some tips I need to know? I'm figuring on doing 2 or 3 of these about 2-3 weeks before I make the actual cake.

Thanks so much! You guys really are the best!

DLJC s use half butter, half crisco and that's the only time I had trouble too. The transfer thaws in a matter of minutes so you have to work quick. Straight from the freezer to the cake, no wait. I've only done on FBCT cake, but I did transfers on the top and several on the sides. One for the sides was out too long and thawed! It messed up a little, but I patched it as best as I coud with a toothpick.

As far as I know the transfer will be just as fine as the cake is, bethola. So I read on another post from someone who has done many FBCTs. Transfer colors won't run. They look just like the rest of the bc.

Good luck. You will be thrilled I'm sure with how it turns out. It is so satisfying to see all that piping work go so smoothly on the cake...it's like magic. I wanted to do another one immediately!

I've done alot of FBCT and haven't had any of the colors run.

I've always put mine on parchment paper and use BC with crisco. Every once in a while the design will stick a bit and I just assumed it was because I didn't leave it frozen long enough or didn't work fast enough and it had already started to thaw.

Was the suggestion to put the design right on the sheet protector? If so, I'll try that and maybe some butter in my BC. Awesome! thumbs_up.gif
