I am probably not the first person to think of this but... I saw the small Wilton heart shape silicon pan, and my first thought was petit fours second thought ---cakeballs!!

I tried it two different ways.
Filling the mold with candy melts, freezing for 1 min. and dumping out excess candymelts, filling with cakeball mixture and topping with candymelts. I froze the whole thing -thinking it would be easier to remove the cakeballs. This way definitally the prettiest and smoothest surface, but not easy to get out of the mold without cracking.

I also tried filling the mold with the cakeball mixture, freezing and then dipping as usual. This is easier, but not as smooth a finish.

I like the results though. Decorating them with white candy melts hid the imperfections.

Great idea! I love the ones with the cornelli lace! thumbs_up.gif So with the easy way, did you freeze the cakeballs in the pan or pop them out first, then freeze before dipping? I have some oversized mint molds I could try this with!

I just want to pop one in my mouth right now.

I for one have never made cake balls. I know there is a recipe on here that which I have only read once and wasn't that posted by cookieman a while ago? I'm sure there are more than that now.

I am intimidated by them. It seems like a lot of extra work that you have to do right away using cake scraps I presume!

I have seen so many of these cute little cake balls or petit fours as I'll call them. I just don't get cake scraps lately because I don't have to level my cakes. Maybe I should add a bit more batter next cake coming up just so I'll have an excuse. icon_rolleyes.gif

oh no cake mommy...most bakeries just the weekly cake scraps.

They are called rum balls and I've seen them as large as golf balls.

I take all my trimmings for the week in a zip lock bag and when i have down time, I throw a little liqour and icing and put everything in the mixer..

Right now I have a double door freezer and one side is completely full of cake balls! lol

I like the football idea. I am doing a cake in my new football stadium pan for the Superbowl. DH gave it to me for Christmas. Do you think it was really for me? Or maybe Merry Christmas to himself? icon_confused.gif Anyway, the little football cake balls would go perfect with it.

GO COLTS! (Sorry lilsis icon_biggrin.gif ) Peyton's just such a cutie!

These heart cake balls look beautiful. Sisters birthday is V-day & I'm going to make her a batch for herself. Have made them 2 time myself & they were great. Once with sister for January birthdays where she works, we rolled larger cake ball in white chocolate then coconut and then smaller balls rolled the same to make snowmen. Used fruit roll ups for scarfs, black foodwriter for eyes & mouth and fruit roll up for noses. Turned out great & sister loved them.

Those look great. I will have to make some for my grandsons for V-Day. I made some at Christmas and they loved them. So the ones in the pictures, are they just dipped in the melted candy?

Wait... do you take the hearts out and then fill/seal them? Or do you take them out to 'unstick them' then put them back in the mold to fill? I'm confused. Won't they crack if you stuff them when they're out of that mold?

Wow guys I was away from the computer today-Maddyscreations and I had a DOS! It was alot of fun and the first CC member I have met in person.

Thanks for all the comments on my heart cake balls. Let me see if I can answer a few questions. Yes the covering is candy melts. And I tried two different methods for making them. One was to fill the mold with candy and then dump it out for the shell. Put in the freezer to set, and then fill with cakeball while still in the mold, cover top with candy melts, freeze completely and then pop out completed cake ball. That was the prettiest but difficult to get out of the mold.

Other way was to fill mold with cakeball freeze and pop out cakeball in heart shape and dip in candy melts. Much easier and faster but the covering was not as sharp on the edges.

I am going to take a few to work and see what results I get. I will hang a sign up sheet beside the plate of samples icon_twisted.gif
