Anytime you stack more than 2 layers or 4"of cake, you need to dowel it. If you are setting one 6" on one 10" than no you don't need to dowel it. ![]()

And if you're stacking a 4" tall tier on top of another tier, you need a board (same size as the cake) under that top tier.

Actually a good idea to have ALL tiers on boards the same size--makes it easier to move them around.
