In fear of sounding like an idiot without any imagination, I do have a question regarding cookie cutters. Is it just me who finds it hard to see what a cookie cutter is supposed to be, or how the cookie is supposed to be decorated when you look at a cutter. Some things are obvious, like hearts etc, but some cutters obviously needs icing details to bring out the design. A simple example is the handbag cutter, it is how you ice the cookie, put on a handle etc which gives the cookie its distinct character. The undecorated cookie just looks like a blob that could be anything. I have tons of cutters, but sometimes I just look at them and cannot come up with a good way of giving the cookie the right look. I have some cookie books and get some ideas from pictures there, and obviously from CC. Is there a website or even a cutter catalogue which have examples of decorated cookies to help me along?

The gallery does have some great cookies done by our great CC people. If you see a picture, you can always PM them and ask details.

If you click on fellow CC'ers websites they might have more pictures on that then in CC's gallery.

I also like this places cookies--here's the link:

Have fun!

Those are cute cookies at flourpot!

I feel the same way! I love browsing in the cookie gallery and seeing cookie sites to get ideas. I feel like I'm not imaginative or creative at all anymore! I'm hoping once I get the techniques down, I'll relax and be able to think of some unique ideas...I can hope anyway! icon_smile.gif I just saw this site the other day:
www.coppergifts.com

You can scroll over the cookie cutter and it will show you a finished cookie. I didn't have a chance to look through much but it seems like they have a lot of cute cutters at least.

good luck with your cookies..I'm sure they are great and more creative than you think!!!

Bakinggirl, dont feel alone! I am the same way. Sometimes, I just can't get a good feel for how a specific cookie should look like. LOL icon_smile.gif

You are definitely not alone! I ordered an action hockey player cutter from Kitchengifts.com but there was no cookie or drawing to help me understand what the person who designed the cutter was thinking! I could kind of figure out what was supposed to be an elbow and what was supposed to be a knee... but was it the right knee or the left knee? Or was it the puck? Would have been nice if they offered the designer's drawing along with the cutter. I've never used it.

On some of my cookies, I've had my daughter, who is far more artistic than I, design the details for me. If you have the most recent issue of Mailbox News, the platter of trumpet cookies was designed by my daughter and made by me. I stared blankly at that outline of a trumpet for quite some time before she came to the rescue! icon_biggrin.gif

I have tons of cutters from my mom, grandmas, etc.. I love playing "Guess what this is supposed to be" with the little kids. icon_biggrin.gif

Thank you all so much, I am so glad I am not the only one who has "Cookie Cutter Dyslexia". You are right Diane M, you should really get a picture of what the finished product could look like when you buy the cutter, especially if you buy something as intricate as a hockey player.

Thank you also for links and suggestions. I had a look at the Coppergifts website, that was exactly the sort of thing that I need. Now I feel inspired to pull out my huge tub of cutters and get decorating!

I use google images to get clip art. If I was doing a purse I would search "purse clipart". It usually comes up with a cartoon drawing that helps me tons!

I have a big tote of cookie cutters that were my mom's. I don't know what half of them are and haven't used them. I may have to start getting creative and making up something! lol

It's really a challenge sometimes to imagine how a cookie should be decorated. I don't have a lot of cutters and sometimes when I get orders with a specific theme I really have use my imagination to turn ordinary cookie shapes (like eggs and rounds) into something else.

Get a look at my Undersea cookies to see what I mean, If all else fails...I go search the web!

this happens to me all of the time as well....I am constantly using the web, clipart, or fellow cookie decorators, for inspiration...One site I buy cutters from sometimes has pictures with them as well:

I have the same problem, that's why I like the old timey cookie cutters. They leave an intricate impression in the cookie so you don't have to use your imagination to think of how they should be decorated.

That's the one nice thing about the cutters that imprint a design on top, you don't HAVE to ice them to be able to see what they are. icon_lol.gif I don't use them very often but my mom had tons of them when I was a kid, probably so she didn't have to spend hours decorating, she's given me some that I really loved as a kid.

I recently bought the six pack of bug cookie cutters from Wilton and my husband couldn't figure out what some of them were, he thought the spider was a bat. icon_confused.gif

Hallmark cutters are really good for that. I was blessed without having that problem, icon_cool.gif , but my mother is like that. She spent a fortune on those plastic one's that hallmark does. Also, if you like copper cutters there's Simons Cookie Cutters and Michael Bonne who do them with inserts to help with decorating. I tend to like copper more, myself.
