Fondant and gumpaste decorations on buttercream...

I've seen many cakes with this done, but I'm very hesitate to it. My fear is that the bc will soften the decorations and fall off the cake.

I make a butter cream with real butter, so thats why it makes me nervous.

Does anyone have any helpful hints for using fondant and gumpaste on buttercream?

Thanks!

Put the fondant/gumpaste decorations on at the last possible minute, and that will help to keep them from getting soft and running before the cake is served. Also, try to avoid using all-butter buttercream for outdoor venues, especially in hot weather. Hope that´s a helpful suggestion and not just a statement of the obvious! But, seriously, I won't use anything but fondant for outdoor events (of course, I live in the tropics, so I'd be a fool to do anything else, but it can get mighty hot in California, too).

I have put gumpaste embellishments on buttercream as early as a day before the event. I have never had a problem. Just make sure that the gumpaste is dried completely first.
