I shop at Sobeys which is walking distance from my house and they sell Dairyland butter for $5.99. I could get it for $4 at Costco but its a 20 min drive so am I really saving money. I have checked all the local supermarkets and the price ranges from $4-$6 here. And thats even for the no name brands at superstore. Perhaps $60 was a little much to charge for that cake but I don't see how anyone could make money charging much less than that.
I buy butter at Costco about 20 pounds at a time and freeze it until I need it. One trip to Costco and judicious use of your freezer can save you a lot in ingredient costs over time.
Oh thanks I didn't even realize I could freeze the butter! That would save money for sure!
I can see that... it takes a pound and 1/2 of butter (1/2 for the cake and 1 pound in the frosting) for me to make an 8" cake.
In Calgary you can get butter at Walmart and sometimes Shoppers Drugmart for less than $4. I'm not sure where you get your fondant or what brand but you can get large (about 20 lb) containers of white Satin Ice at PM Hobbycraft for significantly less per pound than Wilton. They also sell red, black, and chocolate in smaller sizes.
