Hi maddyscreations,

You could be applying to much pressure against the cake. So much so that you are actually pushing the RI under the stencil.

It could also be the fondant -- is it to soft?

When I stenciled my cake a while back, I let the cakes sit out overnight to harden up. This gave me a firmer surface to work on. I also had to keep telling myself while I was spreading the RI over the stencil, to move slowly, don't press too hard, try to cover in one smooth stoke.

I hope this helps,
Tammy

I think your royal icing is too thin. The only time Ive had a smugde is when I hit the stencil on accident and moved it. Id this your first time stenciling? It is easier to learn on a square cake or if it is a round, have someone hold the stencil in place while you deal with the icing
