I want to work on a few ideas with some cake dummies. Someone (who had no idea where they heard it from) told me that there is a product out there that is "like fondant". It's supposed to be fake fondant and much cheaper. I want to work on quite a few designs so I know that real fondant will be very expensive to buy and tedious to make.

You could try making your own fondant, which may be less expensive than ordering something. There are two MMF (marshmellow fondant) recipes in the recipe section. Rhonda's is really easy to make and might be best for using for a cake dummy.
